We're not only worldly, we're world-class. Deakin University is the proud recipient of QS 5 star rating for excellence in 2013.

Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Programme (HEPPP)

Deakin promotes access to higher education and successful participation in undergraduate courses by students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds. The evidence-based program of initiatives is funded by the Commonwealth Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Programme (HEPPP),

The 2016 program:

  • builds on school students' aspirations and introduces post-school education as a desirable and achievable pathway to pursuing life goals
  • enables access to facilities, technology and information through financial support and capacity building to build student retention and success
  • enables students to achieve academic success through peer learning, and by embedding academic skills, digital literacy, employability skills and inclusive practice into the curriculum
  • is strengthened by data analysis and robust evaluation of the initiatives and the program as a whole.

Deakin Engagement and Access Program (DEAP)

DEAP works with school students and parents to build on aspirations and raise awareness of university.

Program activities include study skills and academic workshops, campus visits and mentoring, from Grade 4 through to Year 12. The team works with around 40 selected schools in low socio-economic status areas local to Deakin's campuses.

Deakin Learning Centres

The Deakin Learning Centres located at Dandenong, Werribee and Craigieburn, offer the wider Deakin community the chance to study a university degree online with face-to-face support from Deakin staff.

Students can take degrees in Health Sciences, Commerce, Early Childhood Education or Psychology. The centres also serve as drop-in support centres and bases for other Deakin students living locally.

Digital accessibility project

Deakin University has a diverse community of staff, students and visitors and is keen to make sure that everyone is able to access the University’s digital content quickly and easily, regardless of physical ability. Working with a consultant from Media Access Australia, the project aims to prepare the University to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, Level AA - the recognised global standard for web accessibility. The project outcomes will include policies, guidelines and a plan of action for the University.

Inclusive curriculum and capacity building

This project looks at modifications to teaching delivery and learning methods and online resources to better meet the needs of students from low SES backgrounds.

It includes embedding of academic skills and literacies, digital literacy practice, career development learning and universal design principles in curriculum, to make learning at Deakin inclusive for all students.

Peer support

No one understands what it's like to be a student better than a student. This project includes several peer support schemes which enable trained students to offer support to other students, including:

Work integrated learning (WIL) bursaries

Work integrated learning bursaries help students who might not otherwise be able to undertake a work integrated learning placement, for financial reasons, such as having to relocate or giving up part-time employment.

Evaluation, data analysis and support

  • Evaluation – Creating Impact Through Evaluation (CITE)
The CITE project provides evaluation, research capacity building and dissemination of evaluation/program findings, by initiative and across the program as a whole
  • Data analysis and support
Works with the CITE team to coordinate data management and statistics to make the most of various measures used and provides data and data analysis support to projects.
