Higher Education Participation Programme (HEPP)
Through an evidence-based program of six initiatives funded by the Commonwealth Higher Education Participation Programme (HEPP), Deakin promotes access to higher education and successful participation in undergraduate courses by students from equity groups:
- people from low socioeconomic backgrounds
- people with disability
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
- people from rural and remote areas
- people from a non-English speaking background and
- women in non-traditional areas of study.
The 2015 program:
- builds on school students' aspirations and introduces post-school education as a desirable and achievable pathway to pursuing life goals
- enables access to facilities, technology and information through financial support and capacity building to build student retention and success
- enables students to achieve academic success through peer learning, and by embedding academic skills, digital literacy, employability skills and inclusive practice into the curriculum
- is strengthened by data analysis and robust evaluation of the initiatives and the program as a whole.
DEAP works with school students and parents to build on aspirations and raise awareness of university.
Program activities include study skills and academic workshops, campus visits and mentoring, from Grade 5 through to Year 12. The team works with around 40 selected schools in low socio-economic status areas local to Deakin's campuses.
The Deakin Learning Hub at Dandenong offers the Dandenong community the chance to study a university degree online with face-to-face support from academic and support staff.
Students can take degrees in Health Sciences, Information Systems or Psychology. Also serves as a drop-in support centre and base for other Deakin students living locally.

This project looks at modifications to teaching delivery and learning methods and online resources to better meet the needs of students from low SES backgrounds.
It includes embedding of academic skills and literacies, digital literacy practice, career development learning and universal design principles in curriculum, to make learning at Deakin inclusive for all students.
No one understands what it's like to be a student better than a student. This project includes three peer support schemes which enable trained students to offer support to other students.
Aims to improve graduate outcomes by enabling financially and socially disadvantaged students to undertake work placements and credit bearing work-integrated learning units.
- Work-integrated learning bursaries
Helps students who might not otherwise be unable to undertake a work-integrated learning placement, for financial reasons such as having to relocate or giving up part-time employment.
- Work placement program
Provides paid work placements to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Helps students to gain practical experience in the workplace, improving their career prospects.

- Evaluation – Creating Impact Through Evaluation (CITE)
The CITE project provides evaluation, research capacity building and dissemination of evaluation/program findings, by initiative and across the program as a whole
- Data analysis and support
Works with the CITE team to coordinate data management and statistics to make the most of various measures used and provides data and data analysis support to projects.
