Legislation

Deakin University Act 2009 (Vic)

Deakin University is governed by the Deakin University Act 2009 (Vic).

The Act includes a list of objects and the governance requirements for the University.

The Act empowers the University to make Statutes and regulations for the organisation, management and good governance of the University.  The Solicitor's Office is responsible for drafting new and amending legislation. University legislation appears on The Guide.

Included in the University legislation is the establishment of the Academic Board, the principal academic authority in the University, the courses which are offered and related matters such as admission and selection, fees, academic progress, academic awards and student discipline.

In addition to Statutes and regulations, the University has policies and procedures which are often linked to the legislation.  These may be accessed on The Guide.

Interpretation

The Solicitor's Office is able to assist in interpreting all legislation, including Commonwealth, State and internal legislation, advise on the need for new or amending legislation and draft all necessary legislation.

Amending and Making Legislation

All new and amending legislation must be drafted by the University Solicitor's Office.

It is then submitted to the Legislation Committee for consideration.

If appropriate, Legislation Committee will recommend to Council that the new or amending legislation be made.

If you require assistance with any legislation, please contact the University Solicitor's Office on (03) 5227 8524 or by email to uni-solicitor@deakin.edu.au.
