Event details

To celebrate National Carers Week, the School of Health and Social Development will host a screening of the intimate documentary ‘On Richard’s Side’.

Filmed over three decades, ‘On Richard’s Side’ follows the story of 35 year old Richard. Living with a severe intellectual disability since birth, Richard has relied on the care and love of his parents, Deirdre and Charlie, friends, family and support workers. Upon experiencing a major change in his life, his mother Deirdre is now fiercely committed to finding answers to the questions: who will care for Richard in the future and what will happen to her son when she is no longer around?

Following the screening and lunch, attendees will be invited to participate in a facilitated discussion about supporting people with intellectual disability to have their preferences heard during decision making. Richard’s mother, Deirdre Croft, will also be joining us from Western Australia and will be hosting a Q&A.

Carers and other community members interested in the unique issues specific to caring for people with a disability are invited to join us for a day of reflection, celebration and sharing.
