The urge to conserve: Why is it so difficult to get people moving? Melbourne Alumni Seminar

14 March 2018
6.00pm – 8.30pm
Deakin Downtown, Collins Square,
Tower 2 – Level 12, 727 Collins Street, Melbourne

This presentation will cover why we need to get people moving more and will also explore the various challenges in helping people to achieve this goal.

Event details

Physiologically, humans have evolved to resist gravity. Thousands of years ago, the ability to walk, run, climb, carry and dig was critical for survival. However, physical activity is now less about survival, and more about chronic disease prevention and healthy ageing. In spite of over 50 years of research into the benefits of exercise and how to get people more active, many people around the world fail to meet public health physical activity guidelines.

This presentation will cover the latest evidence about why we need to get people moving more and sitting less, and will also explore the individual, environmental and policy challenges in helping people to achieve this goal.

Speaker

Professor Jo Salmon is Alfred Deakin Professor and Co-Director, Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN) at Deakin University.

Professor Salmon's program of research focuses on the behavioural epidemiology of children’s and adults’ physical activity and sedentary behaviour. She is interested in the assessment of these behaviours; in understanding the individual, social and environmental factors that influence participation; and the development of strategies to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary time among children and adults.

Recent research includes the development and validation of instruments to assess physical activity and sedentary behaviour among children; descriptive studies of influences on child and youth physical activity and sedentary behaviour; and examination of the effectiveness of strategies to reduce children’s sitting time and promote physical activity at school and at home.
