Access to and Correction of Personal Information

Deakin University makes information about its operations available to the public through its website and its publications.

Information which is not publicly available may be accessible under the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic) (FOI Act) which provides a right of public access to documents held by the Government of Victoria and its agencies. Deakin University is an agency for the purposes of the FOI Act.

Any person, including members of the public, may apply for access to a document held by the University. 'Documents' are not restricted to written formats. Access may be given in the form of photocopies or transcripts, or by giving an opportunity to inspect or listen to the document. Access to a document may be denied if it is exempt from disclosure under the FOI Act.

Submitting a request to access documents

Requests for access to documents held by the University should be sent by email to foi@deakin.edu.au or by mail to:

Freedom of Information Officer

For the request to be considered valid under the FOI Act, it must be:

(a) in writing – the Request for Access Form (PDF, 823KB) may be used;

(b) accompanied by the application fee of $31.80 and

(c) sufficiently clear to enable the University to identify the documents to which access is sought.

Please note that this fee increases every year from 1 July.

Payment

The application fee may be paid online or by cheque or money order payable to Deakin University. Credit card payments may be made by telephoning Student Central on (03) 5227 2333 and quoting item code M15.

The University may waive the application fee if payment of the fee will cause the applicant hardship. If you believe that this applies to you, please set out your reasons in the Request for Access Form or by separate email to foi@deakin.edu.au.

Response time

Your request for access to documents will be acknowledged upon receipt. If your request is deemed valid, you will then be notified of the due date of the decision, normally within 30 days.
