Terms of reference and composition

Purpose

The Course Standards Committee is responsible to the Academic Board for reviewing academic proposals for new courses or revisions to existing courses and providing advice and recommendations to the Board on issues relevant to academic quality and standards of courses.


Functions

  1. To monitor, review and advise on academic standards and quality relevant to higher education courses, including admission eligibility criteria.
  2. To review the quality and standards of new and revised higher education courses and their compliance with the Higher Education Standards Framework and make recommendations for their approval on academic grounds to the Academic Board.
  3. To provide advice to the Academic Board regarding new and amended legislation, policy, procedures and processes to ensure the academic standards and quality of higher education courses.


Rules of Operation

The Committee shall conduct its business subject to the Standing Orders of the Academic Board and its committees (PDF, 138.0 KB) and the following provisions:

  • there is an expectation that there will be cross membership of Course Standards Committee and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Integrity)'s course management group
  • Faculty reader (and backups) will have experience in course development and operations and an understanding of the Tertiary Education Qualification Standards Agency and Australian Qualifications Framework regulatory environment
  • the Committee will meet approximately six times a year with additional meetings arranged, as required, to ensure course proposals are processed in a timely manner.


Composition

  • Chair, Academic Board (or nominee) (Chair of the Committee)
  • One member of the Academic Board, appointed by the Chair of Academic Board (Deputy Chair)
  • Chair,Teaching and Learning Committee (or nominee)
  • Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) (or nominee)
  • Director, Quality and Standards
  • One reader (and one backup) from each Faculty with experience in course development and review
  • Co-opted members (the Committee may co-opt members at any given time for specific purposes that relate to providing expertise related to reviewing course proposals) (for example, if there were a research component of a course, then a reader would be sought from the Research and Research Training Committee)
  • Standing invitation to attend with rights of audience and debate:

    Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Integrity)
    Academic Programs Manager, Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Integrity)


Secretary

The Secretary of the Course Standards Committee shall be a member of the Governance Unit.
