Deakin Commerce all in the family as sibling trio graduates

Deakin's first round of graduation ceremonies for 2019 began last week and finishes today, with close to 6000 students to have graduated across 12 events at the Waterfront Campus.

The Dixon siblings – Emmersen, Scott and Nicholas – were among the Faculty of Business and Law graduates Wednesday evening.

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO congratulated the cohort on reaching the important milestone in their education journey.

"I'm delighted to see our graduates step into the next stage of their lives, supported by the skills and knowledge they've gained during their time at Deakin," Professor den Hollander said.

"Deakin's culture is centred on our students and we are dedicated to empowering our graduates to engage with the jobs and industries of the future. We strive for our graduates to realise their full potential, to contribute to making their part of the world a better place and this is why, for the past eight years, the University has ranked first in Victoria for graduate satisfaction.

"I applaud this round's graduates on their contribution to Deakin's culture of excellence, collegiality and inclusion, and look forward to seeing the impact they will have in shaping the communities we serve."

Emmersen Dixon, who is currently an Administrative Officer in the Deakin Division of Student Life, said she had always been interested in business, and wanted to study the Commerce degree to get an overview of business knowledge and skills.

"I was first to begin my Commerce degree, but I was studying part time while working, so it took me a little longer than my brothers," Ms Dixon said.

"Scott had completed a year of Health Science before starting Commerce and Nick went straight into Commerce, giving us all a similar finishing time. We all had different majors, so there wasn't a lot of subject crossover or competition between us, but we generally tried to help each other where we could."

Ms Dixon said each of the siblings was using their degree to head in a different direction.

"Now that I've graduated, I'm eager to continue building on my marketing major and implement that into my work," she said.

"Scott currently works at Deloitte in a consultancy role and Nick is going to pursue further studies in Psychology here at Deakin, so we've headed in really varied directions."
