The latest exhibition at Deakin University's Downtown Art Gallery features works by Stephen Wickham.

The exhibition, Non-Objective Painting, continues Mr Wickham’s long-standing concerns with non-objective art.

“This body of works is a distillation of a particular interest in the use of black pigments and a very dark pallet,” Mr Wickham said.

“Black paintings are a reference to Malevich as well as Ad Reinhardt. These paintings reflect the domestic size of Russian Non –Objective paintings form the first decades of the 20th century.

“The works project into a rich history and equally engage with vigorous conversations around contemporary abstraction and Non-Object art in Australia and internationally.”

Mr Wickham’s artistic practice has involved photography, printmaking and painting. He studied photography at Prahran College of Advanced Education, painting at the National Gallery School of Victoria, and began printmaking at the Victorian [now Australian] Print Workshop.

He has also studied at Monash and Melbourne universities and lectured at the Victorian College of the Arts, Deakin University and Box Hill Institute. His works are held in public and private collections in Australia and overseas.

The exhibition will be on display until Thursday 30 November, at the Deakin University Downtown Gallery, Level 12, Tower 2, Collins Square, 727 Collins Street, Melbourne.

The Deakin University Downtown Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and entry is free.
