Jeff Kennett to deliver Deakin Oration in honour of footy great David ParkinMedia release
One of Australia's most prominent mental health advocates, The Hon Jeff Kennett AC, will deliver the 2015 Deakin University David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change on 1 July at Melbourne's iconic Federation Square.
The former Victorian Premier will combine his passion for mental health advocacy with his love for sport when he speaks about the influence of sport and sporting figures on attitudes toward mental health.
As the founding Chairman of beyondblue and former President of the Hawthorn Football Club, Mr Kennett is uniquely placed to discuss the subject Professionalism of sport – a threat to good health.
Mr Kennett will reflect on his work with beyondblue, where he witnessed first-hand the positive impact that sport and sporting figures can have in raising awareness of depression and anxiety.
"I feel honoured to have been asked to deliver the David Parkin Oration," Mr Kennett said.
"David Parkin is an individual I have long respected for his personal values, teachings and compassion; while at the same time having a very focussed approach to everything he tackles."
The David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change is an annual address which honours Parkin's significant contribution to Australian society in leadership, sport and education.
It marks the positive impact Mr Parkin has had on Deakin's curriculum, in particular the development of its sport coaching course, the first of its kind in Australia.
Established in 2012, the annual David Parkin Oration for Sport and Social Change aims to facilitate the advancement of public knowledge by exploring the challenges and opportunities for sport to act as a driver for social change.
Past orators include Mr Andrew Demetriou and Mr Kevin Sheedy AM.
