Statement and information from Deakin University's Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Gary Smith regarding the university's VTAC first round offers for 2017.

“Deakin students come to our regional Victorian and Melbourne campuses from right across the country and the world, adding a valuable diversity and vibrancy to the communities we serve.

“As Victoria’s first regional university, we remain committed to the communities we serve and a key part of that is making sure we offer courses that are not just popular with students but will ensure they are ready for the jobs of the future, from when they graduate and beyond.

“That’s why we are particularly proud to this year have introduced a range of additional offerings of courses for our students across various campuses, including Environmental Science (Marine Biology), Construction Management / Property and Real Estate, Exercise and Sport Science through the Regional and Remote scheme, Exercise and Sport Science / Business (Sport Management) and a new double degree that combines the Bachelor of Arts with the Master of Arts (International Relations).

"Education and research are Deakin's DNA. This has been evident in our rise in the international rankings, highlighted with the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences ranked last December as the world's best in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ratings of Sport Science Schools and Departments. Our new Exercise and Sport Science course will continue to strengthen our offerings here and we are pleased to see it among the most popular with our prospective students this year.

“Across the board, we are seeing continuing popularity of STEM-based courses, particularly those in the health, technology, cyber security and science fields, reflecting our strength and reputation for innovation in these areas. And Arts is our number one course for popularity, followed by nursing, showing our strength across a range of disciplines, while Commerce also continues to perform strongly.

“Deakin was also the first Australian university to specialise in online learning and it’s especially pleasing to see the growth of our Cloud-based study option. We have this year made offers to 697 students who want to study in the Cloud. Overall numbers have grown from 10,000 in 2010 to more than 13,000.

“It’s still very early in the process for 2017, with Round Two offers still to come and further opportunities for potential students to apply directly to study at Deakin. We expect our numbers to increase once our direct application numbers are known at the end of next month.”
