Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander has sent well-wishes to all members of the University community selected to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games.

Eight Deakin students will compete in events ranging from swimming to artistic gymnastics and long jump to hockey.

Professor den Hollander said selection for the Commonwealth Games was an honour, and just reward for cultivating determination, sacrifice, and a will to succeed.

"All eyes will be on Australia as the Gold Coast showcases its sporting talent and unique fun-loving spirit to the world as host of the 2018 Commonwealth Games," Professor den Hollander said.

"The motto for the 2018 Gold Coast games is 'Share the Dream' and that's exactly what the Deakin community will be doing – sharing the dreams of our exceptional athletes and cheering our hearts out as they strive for excellence, be it on the running track, the hockey pitch, or in the pool."

Professor den Hollander also praised the dedicated athlete support networks that shared the athletes' ambitions and helped to make their dreams a reality.

"We mustn't forget that behind each Commonwealth Games athlete there are friends, family and employers offering unwavering support and inspiration," Professor den Hollander said.

"As with any major event, it is often the team behind the scenes that is the key to success. I would like to salute the Australian volunteers, coaches, and officials – including those associated with Deakin University – who will be working night and day on the Gold Coast to make sure the event runs like clockwork."

The eight Deakin students competing in the XXI Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast are Brooke Stratton (Long Jump), Luke Mathews (800m), Zoe Buckman (1500m), Callum Scotson (Cycling – Road), Alexandra Eade (Artistic Gymnastics), Matthew Haanappel (Swimming), Jessica Hansen (100m Breaststroke), and Madi Ratcliffe (Hockeyroos).

Fellow student Phong Nguyen has been appointed as a technical officer for beach volleyball.
