Earlier this year, students from 20 secondary schools across Geelong and Western Victoria participated in the 28th Deakin University Year 10 Maths Contest at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

The contest was organised by lecturers, John Cameron and Michelle Cyganowski, from Deakin’s School of Information Technology, with the support of a number of staff and students.

34 teams competed across a range of challenges designed to test the students’ mathematical skills. Each team was made up of five students and a teacher, who acted as supervisor, quiz-master, referee and marker.

Mr Cameron said that since its inception in 1989, over 1,000 teams comprising 5,000 students have taken part in the contest. In 2016, 10 Geelong schools competed, together with three schools from Ballarat, five from Western Victoria and one each from St Arnaud and Horsham.

The winning honours went to Geelong Grammar School Team 1, who secured top place over Geelong College Team 2.

Congratulations to all schools and students who participated in the 2016 contest, which was of a particularly high standard this year. Special congratulations also to St Brigid’s College, Horsham, both on their first time competing and also as the school that had the greatest distance to travel!

The 28th Deakin University Year 10 Maths Contest was held in August 2016.
