Deakin University has been named in the Australian Financial Review's (AFR) 100 Most Innovative Companies list for its Deakin Genie smartphone app.

Deakin comes in 33rd on the list, which was announced at the 2018 Most Innovative Companies Awards Night last night at the Four Seasons Ballroom in Sydney.

Deakin Genie is a voice-controlled smartphone app that acts as a personal assistant for students.

The app offers features such as a 24/7 Q&A service, easy access to staff and learning resources and vital course and assignment information. It also offers students a daily briefing, showing them their timetable, upcoming assignments and exams.

Deakin is the highest-ranked tertiary education provider on the AFR’s list, and is one of only three higher education institutions to make the top 100.

The AFR publishes its top 100 list annually to assess and reward innovative practices being undertaken by Australian organisations. The list is now in its seventh year.

Candidates are judged on a specific innovation implemented in the last twelve months, as well as a series of questions on how the innovation now works within the organisation.

Finally, Inventium (the Australian innovation consultancy tasked with judging and compiling the list with the AFR) provides its Innovation Benchmarking Survey, which scores candidates on a range of innovation metrics.
