A new portfolio in the Deakin Law Students’ Society (DLSS) was recently celebrated with sold-out event at the Deakin Melbourne Burwood Campus.

Attracting a capacity crowd of 130, the Social Justice and the Law event launched the DLSS’s new Social Justice and Equity portfolio, an inaugural volunteer handbook and also marked the society’s recent restructure.

Launching the new portfolio, Justice Kevin Bell (Supreme Court of Victoria) spoke about his career journey and the relationship between social justice and the law while Belinda Lo (CEO of the Federation of Community Legal Centres) addressed the importance of volunteering.

Director of the DLSS Social Justice and Equity portfolio, Vivi Teshuva, says the event - which sold out three times - was an outstanding success.

‘The aim of the new portfolio is to raise awareness and show students how they can use their degrees and diverse skill sets to fight for a more just and equal society. We will do this by providing resources to help set them on a journey of impacting the world around them. We will also be organising events with guest speakers who will help open their minds to critical-analysis of the notions of fairness and justice within the application of law.’

Ticket sales from the event raised $760 and were donated to the Federation of Community Legal Centres.

Vivi says the evening received enormously positive feedback from the staff and students who attended.

‘It is clear that there is a huge demand for events like these on campus. Students want to volunteer and they want access to speakers and content such as this. Sometimes it only takes guidance from a handbook or inspiration from a speaker to become proactive about social justice and equity.
