Welcome to this August edition of the dKin Times

We were saddened earlier this month to learn of the passing of Dr Richard Searby AO QC, Deakin University’s fourth Chancellor. Dr Searby was Chancellor of Deakin 1997-2005 and his transformation and strengthening of governance of the University is an enduring legacy.

Dr Searby was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in recognition of both his outstanding contribution to Deakin University as Chancellor and his contribution to fields of education, the law, the arts and to business. He was a leading member of Australia's legal fraternity and held a vast array of company directorships.

In 2006, Dr Searby was made an Officer of the Order of Australia 'for services to education, particularly as Chancellor of Deakin University, to the community as a contributor to the programs of major cultural institutions, and to business and the law'.

If you missed the Deakin, The Beginning photographic exhibition in Geelong, I encourage you to put 12 September in your diary. The exhibition was curated in collaboration with Deakin University Archives who are the custodians of the Deakin story. It explores the early days of Deakin, focusing on campus life and the student experience. It’s a marvellous opportunity to view some amazing photographs and network with your alumni colleagues while enjoying the classic canapés of the 80s.

And for those fortunate enough to be in London September 19, I will be hosting an event for our UK and Europe Alumni Chapter. Director of our Food and Mood Centre Professor Felice Jacka will give an overview of the compelling evidence from around the globe demonstrating the important role that diet plays in mental and brain health in children, adolescents and adults.

I do hope you’ll enjoy this August edition of dKin Times. We value your feedback, so please send through any suggestions on what you like and don’t like about the newsletter through to the alumni team.
