Biography summary

Associate Professor Bernadette Walker-Gibbs is recognized as an outstanding educator with an international reputation in research for her leadership of large scale, longitudinal studies in teacher education and for international comparative studies in rural education. Her research focuses on place-based pedagogy specifically alongside teacher identity and Initial Teacher Education more broadly. Bernadette draws on post-structural and qualitative methods to enhance the capacity of graduate teachers for the diverse contexts in which they will teach. In her role at Deakin University, she is the Academic Course Director for the Teacher for Australia initiative (2014-2017). Bernadette has been a chief investigator on research projects totaling $11.5 million in competitive grants and other tenders, including an ARC linkage.  Bernadette recently published a co-edited book on Self Studies in Rural Teacher Education with Springer and draws upon an extensive research background from across rural Australia.  Bernadette is an Executive member of the Australian Association of Research in Education (AARE), the International Editorial Consultancy Board of the Australian and International Journal of Rural Education (AIJRE) and the Deakin Strategic Research Centre for Research for Educational Impact (REDI). Associate Professor Walker-Gibbs is an established leader in the field of rural education and pedagogy
