Biography

Christoph holds a Chair in Law in the School of Law, Faculty of Business and Law, and is an Affiliated Member of the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citzenship and Globlisation. He is also Chief Investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI); Affiliated Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich; Senior Fellow at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), the University of Bonn; and Senior Associate at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS), the University of Melbourne.

Christoph has a background in Law, Southeast Asian Studies and Art History. He has published widely on intellectual property law, law and development, law and society, legal history and comparative law in Asia. His authored, edited and co-edited book publications are Intellectual Property Law in Indonesia (Kluwer, 2000), Law and Development in East and Southeast Asia (RoutledgeCurzon, 2003), Intellectual Property Harmonisation within ASEAN and APEC (Kluwer, 2004), Globalisation and Resistance: Law Reform in Asia since the Crisis (Hart, 2007), Traditional Knowledge, Traditional Cultural Expressions and Intellectual Property Law in the Asia-Pacific Region (Kluwer, 2009), The Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights: Comparative Perspectives from the Asia-Pacific Region (Kluwer, 2011);  Law and Society in East Asia (Ashgate, 2013); Intellectual Property and Free Trade Agreements in the Asia-Pacific Region (Springer, 2015); and the Routledge Handbook of Asian Law (in print).

Christoph has been a consultant to the EC-ASEAN Intellectual Property Cooperation Programme (ECAP) for projects in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. He has held visiting research and exchange fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property Law in Munich (1997, 2004); the International Institute for Asian Studies in Leiden (1997/98); the Graduate School for International Development at the University of Nagoya (2000/01) and at the Max Planck Institute for International Private and Comparative Law in Hamburg (2001). He was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University (2009), Senior Fellow in the Postgraduate Program at the University of Melbourne (2005, 2007) and visiting lecturer at the University of Surabaya (1996, 1999), Queensland University of Technology (2004), IP Academy Singapore (2004), Brawijaya University Malang (2006, 2009) and at Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta (2014).

He was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Fellowship of the Australian Research Council (2002-2008) and received the Schlössmann Award of the Max Planck Society for the Promotion of Science (1998). He is on the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Asian Law and an Associated Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law.

Christoph is Chief Investigator of the ‘IP in Asia’ project of CCI and of the ARC Discovery grant projects ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage Across Borders: Laws, Structures and Strategies in China and its ASEAN Neighbours’ (with William Logan, Carol Warren and Jianfu Chen) and 'Building an Intellectual Property System: The Indonesian Experience'. Current research interests are intellectual property in developing countries, particularly in Asia; intellectual property and cultural heritage; rights to natural resources; law and society/law and development in Asia.

Christoph joined Deakin University from the University of Wollongong, where he held a Chair in Comparative Law and was Director of the ARC Key Centre for Asia-Pacific Social Transformation Studies (2003/04) and of the Centre for Comparative Law and Development Studies in Asia and the Pacific (2004-2011). He also taught at Charles Darwin University, where he was Director of the Centre for Southeast Asian Law; at La Trobe University and at Griffith University.
