Professor Olsson is a Developmental Psychologist with expertise in lifecourse epidemiology and human genetics. He completed his PhD at Melbourne University in Developmental Psychology in 2000. He maintains a longstanding association with the he Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, working there on a competitive fellowship track since 2000.

Professor Olsson holds an Australian Research Council Principal Research Fellowship (Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award), the first awarded to a Deakin staff member. He has secured competitive research grants totalling over $21 million, produced over 100 scientific publications. His work has been published in journals reflecting the highest quality in the field (Molecular Psychiatry IF=14.49 and The Lancet IF=39.20) www.researchgate.net/profile/Craig_Olsson/publications. He has a h-index of 26. His most influential paper has been cited over 600 times.

He is Director of the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development, a Strategic Research Centre administered through the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor Research (Deakin Research) and based within the School of Psychology at Deakin University www.deakin.edu.au/research/seed

He is Scientific Director of one of Australia’s oldest running longitudinal studies of child development, the Australian Temperament Project, which has been repeatedly funded by the ARC and NHMRC since 1982. The ATP has followed ~2000 parents (Generation 1: G1) and their offspring (Generation 2: G2) from infancy to 30 years (16-waves) since 1982. Generation 3 offspring have been followed since 2011 www3.aifs.gov.au/atp/.

He is National Convenor of the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) Longitudinal Studies Network. Life-course studies sit within the Australiasian precinct and are some of the most well regarded long term cohort studies in the work. The network includes 35 Australian and New Zealand cohort studies involving over 70,000 participants, spanning 4 decades, and in some cases three generations.

Career highlights

Professor Olsson's early work in the area of psychosocial adjustment to chronic illness has been recognised with a Victorian Public Health Award for Excellence in Service Delivery (1999) and a Premier’s Excellence Award (Victorian Public Healthcare Awards) in 2010. In 2004 he was awarded a competitive research fellowship  from the North American Alliance for Depression and Schizophrenia Research (NARSAD) for his work on gene-environment interactions in mental disorder. In 2005 this work was subsequently recognized in an Award for Research Excellence in Psychiatric Genetics (NARSAD, New York), and a second award from the Education Foundation of America Investigator Award. Most recently, in 2013, he was awarded a Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award for his work following offspring of the Australian Temperament Project and in 2014 he bacame Director of the Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development.

Research interests

Prof Olsson's primary research focus is on reducing burden of disease due to mental and behavioural disorders through enhancing preventive intervention. He specialises in longitudinal studies of child and adolescent development and has expertise in developmental psychology, epidemiology and human genetics. His research addresses two related questions: (1) how social and genetic processes (both within and across generations) act to shape individual differences in sensitivity to life events, and (2) how insights into individual differences in sensitivity can be used to ensure optimal targeting of at-risk groups and the best alignment of resources for effective prevention. He has a strong interest in promoting student knowledge and use of longitudinal data resources within the ARACY Longitudinal Studies Network (for which he is National Convener). He would welcome any enquiries from students interested in the aetiology of common mental health problems with the aim of informing new approaches to designing effective preventive intervention.
