Biography

Associate Professor Houshyar Asadi is currently an Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA fellow and leads research in the area of Artificial Intelligence-based Motion Simulator technologies. His research focuses on robotic based-motion simulator platforms, Motion Cueing Algorithm (MCA), human performance and motion sickness analysis in Virtual Reality (VR) environments using AI.

He received the Bachelor of Engineering degree (First Class Hons.) in electrical-control systems, and Master degree in Industrial Electronic and Control Engineering (High Distinction), and the Ph.D. degree in the research area of human perception-based washout filtering for motion simulators using Artificial intelligence (AI) in 2008, 2012, and 2015, respectively.  His PhD thesis won the Alfred Deakin Medal for Best Doctoral Thesis of Deakin University.  Upon completion of his PhD in 2.5 years, he joined Institute of Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI), Deakin University as a Research Fellow in 2015.

Associate Professor Asadi has been serving as Lead Investigator in charge of researching and developing novel AI-based MCAs and motion control systems for different motion simulators including a series of Universal Motion Simulators (UMS). The family of UMS (including core UMS, mobile UMS, and Infinity UMS) is the first and only haptically-enabled robotic-based motion simulation platform in Australia. Associate Professor Asadi has made significant advancements in MCA, human perception modelling, motion control, and simulator kinematics for producing realistic driving/flying motion sensation for motion simulator users including UMS users. He has designed and implemented a number of novel AI-based MCAs for the family of UMS.  These MCAs allow the UMS to provide the most realistic motion simulation without causing simulator (motion) sickness (which is a common issue in all simulators around the world).  The effectiveness of the MCAs has been ascertained by many successful objective and subjective evaluations. This area of research has ultimately led to the establishment of a Deakin spin-off company to commercialise the UMS.  In addition, Associate Professor Asadi also conducts research on sensory system, human factors and autonomous systems.

In collaboration with colleagues, Associate Professor Asadi has secured research funding of over $14 million in total from ARC, industrial, governmental and international organisations. Most of his research projects utilise motion simulators (namely the family of UMS) for virtual prototyping and testing of vehicles as well as for improvement of road and air safety through training of users.

Associate Professor Asadi has published more than 90 papers in high quality journals and conferences. His scholarly endeavours have won a number of prestigious awards including Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA), DAAD – VIC Research Funding Scheme – Veski, Avalon National Defence Innovation Award (High Commendation for Training); Australian Endeavour Fellowship; Franklin V. Taylor Memorial Finalist Award (SMC2018); IEEE SMC Best Chapter Award, Alfred Deakin Medal for Best Doctoral Thesis, International Postgraduate Research Scholarship from Australia (IPRS), Deakin Postgraduate Research Scholarship, National Research Fund AFR Scholarship, Vice-Chancellor award as a top student (Bachelor’s degree), and etc.

Associate Professor Asadi has taken a proactive role in supervising and leading a research team (including Postdoc and PhD Students) on MCA, AI, human performance and robotics.  He also co-chaired the IISRI Technology, Innovation and Commercialisation Committee and also served as IISRI Research and Publication Committee and HDR committee member. He currently serves as IISRI publication coordinator, in charge of analysing data related to publications, Deakin Element admin, etc.
