Biography

Dr Keith Beattie is an Associate Professor within the Faculty of Arts and Education at Deakin University’s Melbourne campus. His research analyzes aspects of the theory, history, and practice of nonfiction film in varying national contexts. He has published numerous books with leading international academic publishers:

Dont Look Back, a volume in the Film Classics series published by the British Film Institute, in association with Palgrave Macmillan (UK). Forthcoming.

In addition to these works he has published an array of chapters and articles in academic sources. His research has been translated into a number of languages, including Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, and Japanese.

He has been awarded various grants, including a Fulbright Scholarship conducted in association with the US National Endowment for the Humanities.

For five years he edited the Australasian Journal of American Studies, the official journal of the Australian and New Zealand American Studies Association. He has been a member of the editorial board of Sites: A Journal of South Pacific Cultural Studies (New Zealand), and he is currently a member of the international editorial advisory board of the journal Studies In Documentary Film (published by Routledge, UK) and a member of the editorial board for refereed submissions of the journal Metro: Film, Television, Radio, Multimedia (Australia).

He has taught at universities in Australia and New Zealand and was the Foundation Director of the Contemporary Studies Program and the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Contemporary Studies at the University of Queensland. At Deakin University he coordinates the Processes of Signification Research Group, and is a member for of the Faculty Board for Arts and Education.

His first degree was awarded by the Australian National University and he was awarded an MA and PhD (with Faculty Letter of Commendation) from the University of New South Wales. In addition he holds two postgraduate diplomas (in education and information management). Prior to a career in academia he worked for a number of years as a researcher and information manager in various Australian federal government departments.

Documentary film studies (with an emphasis on the history and  theory of  documentary film within varying national contexts); theories of representation; documentary film and history.
