Biography
Dr Puri is an established leader in the area of enzyme biotechnology. His lab employs bioprocessing and nanotechnology approaches for enhancing the efficiency of various bioprocesses that have application in food, pharmaceutical and bio-energy sector.
His research focuses on:
• Bioprocessing: It is defined as the use of microorganism for producing and processing chemicals for the benefit of mankind. He has contributed in this area by producing hydrolytic microbial enzymes and Omega-3 fatty acid.
• Nutraceutical: His group addresses enzyme assisted cost-effective extraction of such bioactives since it's considered green and environment-friendly. His group has developed bench-scale technologies for the extraction of microbial and plant based “bioactive”s such as low molecular weight proteins (RIPs), low-calorie sugar substitutes (i.e inulin/ stevioside) and lipids (PUFAs) from marine algae. These bioactives can be used as food supplements.
• Nanobiotechnology for Biofuels: It helps in designing biocatalysts with excellent activity, greater selectivity, and high stability. We have developed nanomaterial-based enzyme immobilization technique for a variety of applications in food and biofuel processing industry. His group has recently optimised an enzymatic saccharification of locally available lignocellulose biomass for biofuel production; a process most sought after in biofuel industry.
