Biography

Before joining Deakin's School of Education, Piper worked as a secondary school history teacher and in the TAFE sector in policy and management roles. These professional experiences has instilled a life-long commitment to supporting high quality, universal public education accessible to all as imperative to the flourishing of a strong and cohesive civil society. Piper's research and teaching interests investigate aspects of the socio-political history of education in Australia, often examining the influence and impact of social class on the experience of education at all levels. She is a keen acolyte of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy and works in her teaching and reseach to realise a human, student-centred approach to all aspects of education and schooling.

Research interests

Piper's research interests are concerned with advancing a more humane and fair society. Her research has examined various aspects of Australian society, attempting to improve the public understanding of systemic and structural injustice. • Critical pedagogy to advance opportunities for all through schooling
  • The interaction between school children, their families, their communities and educational engagement
  • The impact of neoliberal policy and practice on the public school system and the TAFE sector in Australia
