Biography summary

Stephanie is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research – Eastern Health Partnership. Her research interests are patient safety with a focus on clinical deterioration and workforce development of specialist critical care nurses. She joined Deakin University in 2015 as a member of academic staff and also concurrently works as an intensive care unit nurse at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg, Victoria.

Research interests

Stephanie’s research is focused on optimising the safety and quality of patient care.  Stephanie conducted one of the first studies of the trajectory of clinical deterioration in acute ward patients prior to Medical Emergency Team (MET) activation and the utilisation of pre MET escalation systems.  Her research was significant as it has highlighted that there were frequent and repeated opportunities to recognise and respond to early clinical deterioration before the need for MET activation.

Stephanie’s other research interest is health workforce, particularly registered nurses’ transition to specialty practice and graduate employability. Stephanie’s work has a particular focus on postgraduate specialty nursing students’ perceptions of the educational pedagogy, Team-Based Learning, and its perceived influence on the acquisition of professional skills and attributes.

Teaching interests

Stephanie commenced at Deakin University in 2015. Since this time, she has taught in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Her undergraduate teaching is largely focused on acute care.  Stephanie supports the graduate certificate and diploma units of the Master of Nursing Practice Critical Care Suite.
