Professional partnerships

True to our vision, Deakin University pioneers new partnership models locally and internationally with industry, the professions and government in education, training, research and community development. These alliances enable the University to continually renew itself, so that our focus and offerings remain relevant to contemporary needs and directions.

A first for its time

Deakin created Deakin Australia, now DeakinPrime, in 1993 to tailor education and training to the needs of its clients. DeakinPrime has allowed the University to interact in a new way with corporations, professional associations, government agencies and trade unions – from local to international levels.

DeakinPrime has grown to become Australia's leading provider of education and training for organisations, with more than 40,000 people enrolled through partnerships and contracts at any one time.

Corporate partnerships

In partnership with Coles Myer, Deakin launched a prototype for corporate institutes in Australia, providing the ability to link education and training to business outcomes. Recognised as a leading corporate institute learning and development model, the Coles Myer Institute enables Coles' 55,000 staff to access undergraduate, postgraduate and non-award programs by distance education.

A unique arrangement with CPA Australia has seen the creation of a professional development program to certify qualified people to practise accounting within Australia.

In conjunction with Ford, Deakin's first corporate partner, BHP, Castrol, IMAG, ANU and the Strategic Industry Research Foundation, Deakin developed the STAMP project that saw stamping processes and technologies adopted by Ford plants around the world.

The Deakin/Ford partnership embraces not only R&D, but also education and training services, and community development through the Ford Discovery Centre.

Dissolving barriers

In R and D, as in education and training, Deakin's new models are breaking down barriers by taking the University out to industry and bringing industry into the University. Combined projects with industry, professions and government agencies are dissolving barriers between these sectors. New ways of interacting bring benefits for all.

Contributing to communities

At a local level, in partnership with the City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian Government, Deakin was the catalyst for the Geelong Waterfront development, that has helped rejuvenate Geelong and surrounds.

Our partnerships enable us to bring education and training services to Australians from diverse backgrounds who would otherwise not have access to these opportunities.

While our partnerships contribute to the improvement of many communities, they also enhance the quality of our core activities, demanding that the University continue to be both creative and responsive.
