Environmental Sustainability at Deakin

Tawny frog mouth

Deakin University is committed to reducing its environmental impacts. The Environmental Sustainability Enabling Policy and Environmental Sustainability Strategy (834 KB) outlines how Deakin is integrating environmental sustainability principles into all operations, strategies, plans, policies, activities and curriculum.

The Environment Sustainability Strategy is the key planning document for implementing environmental sustainability at Deakin University. Download the strategy summary (250 KB) document.

The Strategy includes a vision and five goals.

The University’s vision is

‘A community working in harmony with minimal footprint, and fostering innovation, learning and accountability for a sustainable future’

The five goals are:

  1. To be an environmentally aware University, working in partnership with the University Community as global environmentally responsible citizens
  2. To demonstrate optimal efficiency and minimal impact with respect to the University's ecological footprint
  3. To embrace technology and research through connectivity, innovation, and communication
  4. To optimistically embrace change for the future
  5. To be a place of wellbeing and fulfilment, with a high quality of life

Priority Actions

  2. Implement energy and water audit recommendations (with six year or less financial payback) to reduce energy and potable water consumption.
  3. Implement a University-wide Environmental Management System including: induction; workshops; procedures; policy; data collection, monitoring and reporting; incident reporting; and continuous improvement methodologies.
  4. Establish an Education for Sustainability Working Group to promote environmental sustainability issues in teaching, learning and research programs.
