Message from the Director | Autumn 2024

The first few months of the new year have flown by, and it is hard to believe that we are nearly in April. ADI has enjoyed a very busy start to the new year with already with many achievements, awards and successes, including  in many external funding schemes (industry and other government schemes) as well as our ongoing success in various Australian Research Council schemes.  Congratulations to our Deputy Director Professor Emma Kowal for her nomination in the Cosmos list of the top 50 women at the cutting edge of science in Australia for the second year in a row.

ADI continues to attract and appoint leading scholars in Australia and internationally and I am delighted to welcome to the Institute Dr Molly McCarthy, who joined us in January as an ARC DECRA Senior Research Fellow. Molly’s work cuts across two key streams of criminology research focused on youth offending and coercive policing. Her recently awarded ARC DECRA fellowship project will explore the changing social and ecological context for youth offending and how this may be contributing to the polarisation of youth offending trends observed in recent years in Australia.

As always, our colleagues continue to lead the way in relation to public dissemination and engagement with already well over 80 media appearances this year so far, spread across both national and international media outlets.

I invite you to attend our many upcoming events including our next lunchtime seminar on Wednesday 17 April presented on “Accountability and the Roman Catholic Church: From Melbourne to Rome and Back”, a MESF Book Launch on Friday 5 April on Dr Andrew Thomas’s book “Iran and the West” and a two-day hybrid workshop on 17 and 18 April on “Populisms, Digital Technologies and the 2024 Elections in Indonesia”.

I am delighted to announce that ADI will be hosting its first International Conference since the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which will be taking place in late November. More communications about this will be released in the coming weeks.

As we navigate 2024, I look forward to the proactive engagement of our partners, stakeholders and many end-users locally, nationally and internationally. It is these collaborative partnerships that allow us to sustain the excellence of our outputs and the impact of our engagement activities.

Sincerely,

Fethi
