Alumnus Richard Colman OAM awarded AM as Deakin celebrates Alumni Queens Birthday Honours recipients

Sixteen Deakin alumni and staff have been recognised in the 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours list for outstanding leadership and service to the Australian community across various sectors.

In a highlight, Young Alumni of the Year Award Winner 2012 and Paralympic superstar, Richard Colman OAM AM (pictured right) was made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia, 'for significant service to sport as a gold medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, and to the community'.

Our Deakin alumni Queens Birthday Honours recipients for 2014 were:

Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia

Richard Colman OAM, AM – BCom 2010 and Deakin Young Alumni of the Year Award 2012

For significant service to sport as a gold medallist at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, and to the community.

Dr Jennifer Zimmer AM – Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Arts and Education 1997-2004

For significant service to the visual arts as an administrator, academic and publisher.


Member (AM) in the Military Division of the Order of Australia

Brigadier Charles Bilton CSC AM – MA 2010

For exceptional service in the fields of Army modernisation as Director GeneralDevelopment and PlansArmy, and command as Commander 7th Brigade.

Brigadier Marcus Thompson AM - MA 2012

For exceptional service as Commanding Officer 3rd Combat Signals Regiment, a Defence representative while seconded to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and Director General Special Operations Capability


Officer (AO) in the Military Division of the Order of Australia

Major General John Caligari DSC AM, AO - MA 2006

For distinguished service as Head Modernisation and Strategic Planning-Army and Head Systems Capability Development Group.


Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division

Fiona Harley OAM – BSS 1994

For service to the community, particularly family welfare.

Helen Hatherley OAM - ME 1995 

For service to education as a teacher and administrator of specialist schools.                      

James Farrell OAM – BCom 2006, LLB 2007, GCertHE 2013

For service to the community, particularly through social welfare and legal access programs.      

Paul Tracey OAM - MBA 2011

For service to the community of Randwick through volunteer and local government roles.

Conspicuous Service Cross

For outstanding achievement as the Chief Instructor in the Undergraduate Branch of the Australian Defence Force Academy.

The Bar to the Distinguished Service Cross

For distinguished command and leadership in warlike operations as the Commander of Joint Task Force 633 on Operation SLIPPER from October 2012 to September 2013.

Brigadier Andrew Bottrell CSC and Bar – MA 2011
Distinguished Service Medal

For distinguished leadership in warlike operations as Director General Transition and Redeployment on Operation SLIPPER from December 2012 to November 2013.

Brigadier Peter Kearns DSC – MA 2011
Commendation for Distinguished Service

For distinguished performance of duty in warlike operations as Assistant Commander - Afghanistan, Joint Task Force 633, on Operation SLIPPER from August 2012 to August 2013.

For distinguished performance of duty in warlike operations as the Commander Combined Task Force 150 on Operation SLIPPER from December 2012 to April 2013.
