Welcome to the March 2012 issue of The Deakin Times - your monthly Alumni eNews service.

This month find out about the launch of Deakin’s new Centre for Rural and Regional Law and Justice, also read about our new partnership with IIM Indore, research into obesity levels in children and Eminent French economist, Professor Patrick Guillaumont’s views on climate change. We also profile two highly successful graduates from the world of business.

Congratulations to two of our Alumni, Sean Jesudason and Rozaine Cooray, who both won awards at the recent Austrade Sri Lanka Alumni Awards held in Colombo.

Alumni in the news
Congratulations to the following Deakin graduates:

Her Excellency Ms. Louise Hand PSM (1994), who was recently appointed as Australia’s High Commissioner to Canada. Ms Hand commenced her post in January. Ms Hand was previously Australia’s Ambassador for Climate Change.

Tony Ellwood (1994), who has been appointed the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria. Mr Ellwood will commence this post in August. Mr Ellwood was formerly NGV Deputy Director from 2000-2007 and is currently the Director of the Queensland Art Gallery.

Deakin Alumni Awards 2012
Nominations are open for the annual Deakin Alumni Awards and you are invited to nominate outstanding Alumni for these Awards. The Awards aim to recognise, acknowledge and promote prominent Alumni around the world who have achieved outstanding successes. Nominations close 1 June 2012. Austrade Singapore Australian Alumni Awards 2012
Nominations are now open for these coveted Awards. Award categories include the Eminent Alumnus Award and the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award. Nominations are open to all Singaporean graduates of Deakin. Nominations close 15 April 2012. Contact Austrade Singapore for a nomination form.

Professional Mentoring for Early Childhood Teachers Program
This program is a new initiative delivered by Deakin University and Victoria University and funded by the Department of Education and Early Childhood (DEECD).  The aim of the program is to offer beginning or professionally isolated early childhood teachers the opportunity to be mentored by an experienced teacher to help build knowledge, skills and practice.  The program is free for mentees and commences in March 2012. Geelong Young Professionals – Networking event 20 March 2012
Deakin Alumni are invited to attend the GYP’s, Networking For Career Development presented by Robyn Henderson - Global Networking Specialist at Four Points by Sheraton Geelong. RSVPs are essential by 13 March. Cost is $35 pp. For more information visit GYP 2012 events.

China Careers Fair – Shanghai 22 April 2012
Deakin will participate in the Austrade China Careers Fair in Shanghai on 22 April 2012. This Australian Government initiative is a free Careers Fair, featuring a wide range of companies who are looking to meet with Chinese graduates of Australian universities.

2009-2011 graduates from both undergraduate and postgraduate courses are eligible to attend this event. This is an excellent opportunity to network and discuss the key skills required to work in various organisations.  A seminar program will also feature. To attend, graduates must register online.
