Dear Deakin Alumni member,

Welcome to the 2011 November issue of The Deakin Times - your monthly Deakin Alumni e-news service.

On behalf of the Deakin Alumni Community I congratulate our newest Alumni members, who graduated at recent Trimester 2 graduations ceremonies held in Geelong and officially welcome you to Deakin’s graduate ranks - a  very select group of 154,000 people currently worldwide. I hope you continue to enjoy a long and rewarding association with your alma mater.

In this issue, find out the winners of our recent Alumni iPad 2 competition, as well as all the happenings at Deakin University including; various research initiatives  being undertaken to improve the survival rate of premature babies and fight the obesity endemic, we also catch up for a chat with the United Nation's High Representative for the Alliance of Civilisations and Former President of Portugal Dr Jorge Sampaio, plus read about all the other news and events from the Deakin Alumni Community.

Deakin Alumni iPad 2 Competition winners
Thank you to 4000 Alumni members who entered our competition last month, to win one of two, iPad2 products. I am happy to announce that the winners are, Ms Sarah Freeman (new Alumni member category) and Mr Andrew Gray (existing member category) . Congratulations to you both and enjoy your prizes!

2011 Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery Awards
The Deakin University 2011 Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery Awards were held recently in the Olympic Room at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Congratulations to Clinical Midwife Consultant from Eastern Health, Vanessa Watkins who won the $20 000 major prize. The award recognises Ms Watkins’ outstanding leadership and dedication to midwifery through a project that enhanced maternity care at Eastern Health. Two award finalists each also received $6000: including Martin Keogh, for excellence in nursing and midwifery leadership in a metropolitan health care environment and Jo Bourke, Barwon Health, for excellence in nursing and midwifery leadership in a regional/rural health care environment. Advance Global Australian Awards
The AGA Awards celebrate Australians living overseas, who exhibit remarkable talent, exceptional vision, ambition and who are future leaders and innovators in their chosen field. They are the only awards to recognise the important contributions of the more than 1 million Australians living abroad.

The Awards are open to all Australians citizens or a non-Australian alumnus of an Australian university, working outside of Australia. The Award presentation ceremony will be held in April 2012 in Australia. Nominations close Friday 2 December 2011 at 12.00pm PST time. Engage Team and Customers for Better Business Outcomes - Seminar and Networking Evening
