Welcome to the October 2012 issue of The Deakin Times - your monthly Alumni eNews service.

In an exciting first, I wish to announce that Deakin Alumni members and their immediate family can now receive a 5% loyalty subsidy off all postgraduate course fees on new enrolments from Trimester 3, 2012 – Trimester 2, 2013 inclusive. Please visit the Alumni website for more details and application forms.

Congratulations also to our eleven 2012 Alumni Award recipients as reported earlier this month and to our newest Alumni members who graduated during our October ceremonies held  last week in Geelong.

In further news this month, we hear from Deakin’s latest honorary doctorate recipient the Honourable Michael Kirby AC, CMG, read about Deakin’s latest research initiative with IBM and find out about research into children’s salt intakes and the health benefits of using olive oil. We also update you about the current construction of new student residential accommodation at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

Lastly, on a sad note we pay tribute to one of Deakin’s ‘founding fathers’ and our inaugural Vice Chancellor Emeritus Professor Fred Jevons AO who passed away last week. On behalf of the entire Deakin Alumni Community we send our sympathies to the family and many friends of the man known affectionately as ‘Freddie’.

Kind regards

Alastair Lee
