In November, the Central Alumni Office hosted a reunion for residents and former managers of the Waurn Ponds Campus student accommodation from the 1970s and 1980s.
The lively event was attended by 120 guests who had travelled to Waurn Ponds from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Western Australia to be part of the celebration.
Alumni members arrived with their photos and memorabilia in-hand. They were eager to reacquaint with old friends and share their stories about attending Deakin or antecedent institute The Gordon
Guests enjoyed a buffet lunch in the current residents dining hall which was fitting for the reunion. The room was transformed with large communal dining tables, lots of colour and screens showing photos that the alumni members had supplied.
The reunion was the first of a series of events for Deakin’s fortieth anniversary celebrations and it also marked the fortieth anniversary of the Collins and Laird accommodation units. Deakin Residential Services organised campus tours, including access to the Collins and Laird units to enable residents to visit their former rooms.
On hand to celebrate the occiasion were Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander and Vice-President (Advancement) Mr Ron Fairchild who both gave inspirational addresses highlighting the progress that Deakin has made in the last forty years and its vision for the future.
If you know a Deakin graduate who is not an alumni member, please encourage them to register so they can be invited to events, reunions and other alumni initiatives at deakin.edu.au/alumni.
