Deakin Announces Winner of 2016 Contemporary Small Sculpture Award

Selected from an exceptional field of 305 entries from around the world, Fusion Revisited captivated the judges with its bold combination of form and materials.

Leanne Willis, Manager, Art Collection and Galleries at Deakin University explained, on behalf of the judging panel, that the artist separated the sculptural conventions of base, plinth and form, giving each an iconic status.

“Fusion Revisited stood out to the judging panel for its capacity to interrogate monumentality on a smaller scale,” said Ms Willis.

“The work animates a sculptural bronze, biomorphic form through an imbalance of shape, textures and a shifted centre of gravity.

“Fusion Revisited wryly tries to capture the spirit of the Futurist Manifesto. It strongly recalls Marinetti’s automated forms and the embrace of the energy and dynamism of modern technology that took place in the early 20th century.”

Now in its eighth year, entries in the annual Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award are limited to 70 centimetres in size. The accompanying Contemporary Small Sculpture Exhibition features the 40 shortlisted works and is open at the Deakin University Art Gallery until 15 July.

The finalists and eventual winner were selected by the judging panel comprising of Jeff Makin, artist, art critic and Director of Port Jackson Press Australia; Augustine Dall’Ava, distinguished artist and sculptor; and Leanne Willis, Manager, Art Collection and Galleries at Deakin University.
