- About Deakin
Bachelor of Social Work 2002
I am currently…
A Mental Health Social Worker with the Community Rehabilitation Centre in Mile End, South Australia. I work with chronic and complex mental health consumers.
The Centre was the first of its kind to be developed in South Australia and it aims to support residents in the least restrictive environment possible through the provision of effective psychosocial support and rehabilitation activities in order to successfully enable the transition to community living and to facilitate the provision of a ‘home like environment’ which affords patients dignity and respects the privacy of residents.
I am also casually employed as an external Social Worker Coordinator for social work students through Flinders University.
I chose Deakin because…
Of its world class off-campus course offerings and services for students living in rural and remote areas.
After leaving uni...
I worked for a number of different organisations as a social worker.
I was employed for a time with Bridge Clinic in a rural city at Murray Bridge, South Australia where I was a Mental Health Clinician. This was a new project at the time that involved working with 17 General Practitioners and Nurses providing support in the application of a mental health service specifically for patients who have chronic mental health conditions for greater than 6 months, as well as addressing patient co-morbidity.
Previous to this, I worked for the Murrumbidgee Division of General Practice where I was Palliative Care Project Coordinator. This project was the first of its kind for the Riverina Region and consisted of consultations, planning, implementation and evaluation of enhanced models of palliative care within the local government areas of Leeton, Narrandera, Jerilderie, Berrigan, Finley and Tocumwal.
Early on I was a Senior Mental Health Social Worker with the Northern York Community Adult Mental Health Service located at Wallaroo in South Australia and also worked for a number of different health services and centres in remote areas.
These positions have provided me with specialised skill set in the areas of bio/psycho/social assessment, crisis management, and advocacy; discharge planning, networking, education, resource development and evaluation and research.
Campaigned for the position of Mayor for the City of Victor Harbor, South Australia. Even though I didn’t win the election, it was a very interesting journey and something which has taught me many things that I will take on board for the next campaign!
Today, I am motivated by…
Wanting to make a real difference to people’s lives and the community.
Professionally, my proudest achievement is…
Leading the way in the provision of palliative care in rural and remote communities.
Success to me is…
Being emotionally, psychologically and physically balanced, along with having a good positive social milieu.
The single-most important issue in the world is…
Equality for all.
The best thing I would recommend about Deakin is…
Its use of cutting edge technology and business acumen in leading the way in the provision of external studies both in Australia and abroad.
I have always been very grateful to Deakin for being such a fantastic University in accommodating external students like me located in regional Australia. It is because of my experiences there that I still continue to sing the praises of Deakin throughout my professional networks today.
In the future I would like to…
Follow my passion and work in palliative care in a rural setting.
