Fiona McCallum
Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing) 2000

I chose Deakin because...
The professional writing course there has such a great reputation and is run by passionate, dedicated people who give that bit extra to help students succeed in their studies. Looking back my course definitely helped me to get my career in writing off the ground.

At uni I was inspired...
To open my mind and learn and study beyond my comfort zone.

After leaving uni...
I started my own business called Content Solutions in Melbourne in 2000 and later moved the business to Adelaide in South Australia. Content Solutions provides writing and editing services to the corporate sector. I am also a novelist.

Recently I have…
Released my first book entitled Paycheque and signed the contract for my second with Harlequin Mira. Paycheque  is set against the rural backdrop of the Adelaide Hills and based around the main character and country girl Claire McIntyre - it is a little McLeod's Daughters' meets Maeve Binchy if you like.

The story revolves around Claire losing everything only to eventually discover what truly makes her happy. She is forced to rebuild her life on the family property, working with her father and his beloved racehorses - including a promising young horse called Paycheque. Throughout her journey, Claire slowly begins to realise there's more to life than chasing a pay cheque – however you’ll have to buy the book to see how it all turns out for her!

Today, I am motivated by...
The desire to succeed while staying true to my heart.

In my profession it is important...
To recognise that there are a lot of things that can’t be controlled and to only worry about those things that you can control.

Professionally, my proudest achievement is...
Releasing my first novel and staying true to my dream of being published despite it taking over nine years to achieve.

I feel a strong connection with...
The universe and nature.

Success to me is...
Finding out what makes your heart sing and doing it no matter how many obstacles are put in your way.

The single-most important issue in the world is...
Greed.

In the future I would like to...
Be an international best-selling author of novels that touch people’s hearts and minds.
