Dr Jodi Richardson
Bachelor of Education 1997 and
Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise and Sports Science) (Honours) 2004

I chose Deakin because…
It was a highly reputable course and included a large component of practical physical education training to accompany the academic curriculum. After teaching for 5 years, I returned to Deakin’s School of Exercise and Nutrition Science on the Burwood campus to pursue further study in the field of Skeletal Muscle Biochemistry. I was interested in the research projects related to strength training offered by the research staff of the school.

After leaving Deakin…
I undertook my PhD studies in Muscle Physiology at Monash University.

At university I was inspired
To learn and educate and to understand the value and privilege of both.

I am currently…
Owner and senior journalist for, Elite Sports Science Communication. I am also a columnist for the sports magazine, Inside Football and the Sports Science Communicator for the High Performance Portfolio of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). I also work as a freelance journalist writing sport science articles for a variety of sports magazines.

Today, I am motivated by…
My passion for combining my academic training with my communication skills to help sports fans understand the important role that sports science plays in elite performance.

In my profession it is important to…
Be well prepared for interviews, to be flexible, to communicate well and to meet all deadlines.

Professionally, my proudest achievements are…
Working as a columnist Inside Football and to be working for the AIS. Another career highlight was the opportunity to interview former AIS Chief Scientist Professor Allan Hahn.

I feel a strong connection with…
My family. I am fortunate that my career enables me to balance family time with my professional work.

Professional success to me is…
Combining my natural curiosity, love of learning, research and communication skills into a fulfilling career.

The single most important issue in the world is…
Climate change.

The best things I would recommend about Deakin are…
The talented research staff, the exercise and sport science facilities and the range of postgraduate course choices for students.

My Deakin courses helped my career…
By educating me about the broad range of sports sciences that underpin elite performance and by inspiring in me a passion to teach. My Honours degree challenged me to develop my research skills, to think critically and to collate multiple and often competing ideas into a coherent and easily understood body of written work.
