With more than 25 years of leadership experience in the field, Deakin graduate John Dawson is an established authority in Australian management consulting circles.

As one of only four Australians who have achieved accreditation with the International Society for Performance Improvement as a Certified Performance Technologist, John explains that he has assisted thousands of people and companies to improve their organisational performance.

'My firm Dawson, McDonald and Associates Pty Ltd was founded in 1992 and is a partner of the worldwide consulting and coaching network Persona Global which spans 45 countries. We provide management consulting, learning and development and professional recruitment solutions for many small enterprises, corporate icons and public sector bodies,' says John.

'We assist our clients to improve organisational performance by promoting strong alignment across people, products, services and processes in order to meet the expectations of customers and stakeholders. We use a variety of methods to help achieve this, for example; running online organisational diagnostics, undertaking customer experience audits, group and individual executive leadership coaching and recruiting executives for our clients."

John graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Social Sciences) from Deakin in 1988 and says his off-campus studies provided 'a welcome break' from the pressures of a challenging business career.

'I undertook my course when I was already in senior executive roles, so my studies were a great way of switching my mind to other issues beyond the daily pressures of managing businesses. The fact that I could study off campus and also attend weekend workshops and tutorials on campus was a great combination,' he says.

'I also enjoyed the stimulation that came with getting outside my comfort zone. This was an especially good course because it encouraged me to think more broadly and understand the impact of western nations on other cultures and it also furthered my interest in politics and history,' he explains.

John has experienced many highlights during a stellar career, including;

  • Chief Executive of a national trade association;
  • working as a political lobbyist;
  • working in insurance with Lloyds of London;
  • Managing Director of an international financial services group with a turnover of more than $300 million;
  • serving on the national board of the Australian & New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance; and
  • achieving accreditation with the International Society for Performance Improvement.

But John says there is one thing he has enjoyed most among his many career achievements.

'I have obtained the most satisfaction from helping people to improve their performance through continued professional development and assisting companies to reach greater heights,' he says.
