Bachelor of Engineering 2007

I chose Deakin because…
Deakin offered a distance learning mode accredited engineering degree and it appeared to be a leader in distance learning at the time I was considering other universities. Being able to study off campus was important because at the time I was with the Royal Australian Navy working as a submariner and was based in Western Australia and later in New South Wales.

After leaving university I…
Immigrated to the USA. I did quite a bit of research before moving my family overseas and it paid dividends on the job front. About two days after I arrived in the US, I was called up for a job interview with company as an environmental specialist based in Oregon. This was my foot in the door. I think having an environmental major as part of my degree certainly helped. About 18 months later I was successful in gaining employment as an engineer with Central Contra Costa Sanitary District in San Francisco. Presently I am working in their Planning Department where I am involved with hydraulic modelling and new technology research.

At Deakin I was inspired…
To be a very resourceful and independent student and to think outside the box. Completing my education whilst living in rural Australia was often very challenging but looking back now though, the experience has helped me with my endeavours in the US.

Today I am motivated by…
Learning about new engineering technologies and the positive impacts engineering can have on the environment and particularly global warming.

In my profession it is important…
To keep pace with changes in the field and think globally rather than get caught up in the micro-aspects of things. This is especially important today considering the technological advancements in recent years that have meant that no one around the world is far away from anywhere.

Professionally my proudest achievement is…
Obtaining my degree with Deakin and realising that my education holds its own in the global workforce. I believe tertiary education in Australia provides its students with unsurpassed qualities that place them on equal footing with any other university graduate in the world.

I feel a strong connection with…
The earth and civilisation where no matter what we do each day, or how small we think a positive contribution is - that it can have a real impact on the world.  I also believe that it is vitally important to ensure we live in peace and balance with the earth’s ecosystems.

Success to me is…
Maintaining high personal ethical standards and striving for your professional goals regardless of the challenges presented to you.

The one thing I would recommend about Deakin is…
The Library – the staff there were unsung heroes and an invaluable resource for distance education students.
