Patrick Carey
Master of Business Administration 1993
After graduating from Deakin in 1993 with a Master Business Administration, Patrick Carey has since gone on to establish CPE Systems Pty Ltd - a highly successful engineering company.
As Managing Director and owner of a mid-sized engineering company, Patrick said that the ability to overcome constant challenges in business is just 'par for the course'.
'Since starting CPE Systems in the mid 1990's in Abbotsford Victoria, I now employ and manage over 30 staff and all the multitude of activities that go with owning a business. In 2007 we also expanded our operations into Chatswood (a suburb of Sydney) in New South Wales.
'There are always a constant set of challenges in moving the company in a positive direction and although this can be very frustrating and risky at times, it is a fantastic feeling when it all comes together,' he explained.
An award-winning company, CPE Systems specialises in test system development and electronic design, working with many leading companies to design and develop innovative solutions for a range of advanced test and measurement applications in numerous areas including aerospace, energy, research, communications, biomedical science and Australian defence.
Patrick remembers his time at Deakin fondly and said that the people he met and worked with while doing the course was a highlight.
'The course helped me in a number of ways, not directly linked to the content. It gave me an opportunity to work with other people who were pursing the same goal and improved my ability to read and comprehend material quickly and then report on this. It also gave me a good overview of what was required in business from a technical point-of-view.
'However, the thing I enjoyed most about my MBA studies was definitely the people. I had a fantastic study group and we are all still good friends and studying off-campus meant that our group had to work more as a team - which I enjoyed immensely.'
As for the future, Patrick plans to further expand the company in a way that 'provides challenges and a positive environment' for the people working in it.
