Deakin Arts graduate and former student resident Rebecca Gleghorn found the opportunity to return to Deakin as an employee too good to pass up.

Rebecca was a marketing officer at the Geelong campus at Burwood and Waurn Ponds Campuses for two years from 2004 to 2006 and says she enjoyed the challenges that went with the job.

"My job covered such a large range of duties, including secondary schools liaison, Deakin marketing event management and organising open days, community careers expos and Tertiary Information Service events. I also provided course advice to prospective students and a leadership role in developing marketing strategies for the faculties, among many other tasks," she said.

"I really loved the event coordination and management aspect of my work and the opportunity to meet and speak with people from many different backgrounds, including prospective students, parents, employees at other universities, community groups and careers teachers around Victoria."

Although Rebecca was interested in psychology and behavioural sciences initially, her studies in this area have proved useful in her marketing role.

"In some respects the course I undertook has nothing to do with my present career path; however, there are often times when I can draw upon my psychological and sociological knowledge to assist me in certain circumstances. My degree also allows me the opportunity to undertake another postgraduate course to further my studies in psychology," she said.

Rebecca says the best thing about studying at Deakin was the flexibility of the course and the capacity for students to indulge in studies outside their major stream or degree area.

"I enjoyed the time I spent studying at Deakin. The ability to study other interest areas, as I did in philosophy and drama, was great and the flexibility to change the way I was studying from full time to part time and on campus to off campus, or even the campus I was studying at, allowed me to study as well as work full time," she said.

And what does Rebecca like most about Deakin? "The helpfulness of the staff and the friendliness of the environment to work and study in," she said.

Rebecca hopes to continue working in events management and marketing, and would like to work on a project such as a major sporting event. Whilst Rebecca has completed a Graduate Certificate in Applied Business, and is about to commence a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Rebecca also plans to continue her studies in psychology one day.

Rebecca recently joined the staff of Latrobe University in Bundoora.
