Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws 2006
Graduate Trudi Kelly is currently an analyst in the Melbourne practice of Corporate Tax at Deloitte.
Trudi credits Deakin for helping her to develop the skills necessary to survive in the business world.
'Deakin provided me with a great range of opportunities that helped develop my skills that are essential in my work. My degrees not only provided me with a broad range of subjects to choose from, but also gave me the opportunity to develop research and public speaking skills that are so important at work.
'Being involved in Deakin Accounting and Finance Student Society (DAFSS) made my time at Deakin all the more enjoyable. It was a fantastic way to meet lots of new people, develop my organisation skills and to also learn a lot more about the industry that I was heading towards.
'I was attracted to Deakin after being involved in a competition called Australian Business Week, which was held on the Geelong Campus at Waurn Ponds during my final year of high school. While I was at the competition, the Faculty promoted their degree a lot and I had the opportunity to speak to people about the degree and find out a lot of information about the University. The lecturers seemed really friendly and I liked the fact that the commerce degree had a lot of different majors in it. It meant I would have the flexibility to structure my degree the way I wanted to.
'I completed a double degree to keep my options open career wise and it has proven to be a smart move as although I work at an accounting firm working in tax involves a lot of law. Studying law has definitely provided me with some of the skills required to work in tax.
'Working in tax seemed the logical choice for me, once I had decided the law wasn't for me. It allowed me to make the most of the skills that I had developed from both of my degrees. After completing four weeks of vacation work at Deloitte I also discovered that tax was something that I also enjoyed.
