Q&A with Jessica Holsman
What were some of the memorable experiences you had at Deakin?
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Deakin! I made a lot of great friends, many of whom I still keep in touch with. We would all help each other to get the best marks, and together my friends and I made sure that we not only learned a lot during the course, but that we enjoyed it too. I also really enjoyed the structure of the course and content that the lecturers covered. The topics were relevant and gave me a clearer understanding of what it would be like and the kinds of skills I needed to further develop in order to enter the workforce well-equipped and prepared. The staff provided me with their ongoing support to ensure I was able to achieve the best results. Apart from the course content, I really enjoyed the research component as well. I was fortunate enough to work under the supervision of Prof. Nicole Rinehart and Dr Nicole Papadopoulos. I strongly believe that the support and ongoing encouragement from the faculty at Deakin was a significant part of what helped me to achieve academic excellence and fuelled my passion for education.
Did you learn anything from your Deakin studies to take directly to the workforce?
All of the skills that I developed throughout my time at Deakin currently serve me in my area of work. My time at Deakin helped me to further develop my study skills so that I could achieve the best results possible. It taught me to be self-motivated, encouraged me to learn how to better budget my time in order to manage the workload, and also helped me learn more effective ways to study in order to maximise my productivity. I now use my knowledge to help teach other students how to master all of these skills.
What are your career/life highlights?
I recently started up a YouTube channel called Study With Jess, where I post weekly study tip episodes to help students enhance their study skills and develop an optimal study technique. I also throw ‘study parties’ where viewers can send in their study questions and I answer them in my video. The aim is to motivate and inspire students to study and to take on a positive attitude towards their studies so that they can get the best results! The channel is the first of its kind and has received over 1 million views in the first 6 months. With over two dozen fan pages and increasing viewer engagement, I used the channel as a platform to launch my educational stationery business seed.ED Educationery. The product line consists of paper based stationery that is unlike anything on the market and features a variety of educational resources including essay planners, exam summary books and project planners – all of which contain innovative study tips designed to assist students with their studies.
Can you give any advice to our current students?
I strongly believe that every student has the ability to achieve greatness. It is up to each of us to identify our own unique strengths and passions in order to find our path in life and pursue a career that not only brings us great satisfaction but also enables us to fulfil a greater purpose and give back to society in every way possible. Although studying can at times be stressful, and the pressure to get high grades can be ongoing for many, it is important to remember why you are studying in the first place and use it to give your studies greater meaning. Remember that each assignment and exam is only a part of your academic journey, so keep focusing on your big picture goals and use them to help you inch yourself one step closer to achieving the life you want.
