Interview with Saifuddin Bin Ahmad

I graduated…
In the very early days of Deakin back in 1983 with a Bachelor of Architecture. I studied at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

I'm currently…
Director of my own architectural company, SNO Architects, based in Selangor, Malaysia. I was also President of the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM) from 2011-2013 – the only Deakin graduate to date to achieve this position.

I chose Deakin because…
It was a new university at the time but had a strong background in architecture, with the course having been originally taught for decades at The Gordon Institute of TAFE. The course had been subsequently taken over by Deakin when the University started in the late 1970's.

After leaving Deakin I…
Worked as an architect in a number of different organisations in Malaysia, including the Public Works Department, BBMB Properties Sdn Bhd, Kumpulan Perunding and Davenport campbell (M) Sdn Bhd. I then went on to start up my own company SNO Architects Sdn Bhd in 1997.

At university I was inspired…
By the wonderful teaching staff and, in particular, Professor Kevin Borland who was the Foundation Professor of Architecture at Deakin.

Today I'm motivated by…
My family and my surrounds.

Professionally my proudest achievement has been…
Becoming Deputy President of PAM and also having one of the buildings we designed selected to appear on Malaysia's 50 cent stamps.

In my profession it is important…
To be able to understand and communicate with people effectively. My course at Deakin certainly helped me in this regard and it also taught me to be innovative in my designs and thinking.

I feel a strong connection with…
Architectural education and using innovation to create sustainable building designs.

Success to me is…
When my clients and end users are satisfied with the outcome of a project. Receiving architecture awards is a great thing, however it is just an added bonus!

The single-most important issue in the world is…
Sustainability.

In the future I'd like to…
Work on more community enrichment programs related to my field.
