In an address to the Asialink National Forum urging Asia literacy for Australia, the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has identified the Centre for Teaching Asian Languages & Cultures at Deakin University as a key initiative in addressing the challenge of growing Asia literacy to support Australia’s economic and cultural engagement with Asia.
The National Forum, Mapping Our Future in the Asian Century, held in Canberra on 25th May 2010, brought together 130 stakeholders and specialists from business, the arts, government, academia and health & development to consider Australia’s progress and identify ways forward.
Of the seven projects funded under the National Asian Language and Studies in School Program (NALSSP), the Prime Minister singled out the establishment of Deakin University’s Centre for Teaching Asian Languages and Cultures as a highlight of the implementation of the NALSSP initiative.
