What is Cultural Heritage?

The world's heritage belongs to all peoples, to conserve and pass on to future generations. Cultural heritage has many aspects, both tangible and intangible.

It is a multi-dimensional concept that includes:

  • Tangible, immovable features such as historic places, monuments, structures, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes.
  • Tangible but moveable objects such as works of art, artefacts, scientific specimens, photographs, books, manuscripts and recorded moving image and sound.
  • Intangible objects, especially expressions of a community's culture such as language, religion, oral histories, folk stories, song and dances, traditional crafts and building skills.

In line with international standards, our Cultural Heritage Program offers a holistic approach to heritage, based on an appreciation of cultural pluralism and diversity. It is designed to develop an extensive cross-disciplinary knowledge of heritage principles and practice and an awareness of community sensibilities.

Our Mission:

The Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia and the Pacific (CHCAP) is a major centre in the region employing international best practice in cultural heritage education, research and consultancy in support of the protection of the region's cultural heritage in the context of rapid urbanisation and economic and cultural globalisation.

The Centre draws practitioners, scholars and students across the region into collaborative projects and disseminates professional information throughout the region by means of a newsletter and conferences, educational programs, training workshops and seminars.

The Centre is closely connected with UNESCO , including the World Heritage Centre, as well as Forum UNESCO, ICOMOS (International Council on Mounments and Sites) and ICOM (International Council of Musuems).

In conjunction with the School of History, Heritage & Society, the Centre offers postgraduate courses in Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies
