Deakin University’s public relations internship program provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience in a professional environment prior to graduation.
Internships are an essential part of the learning process for students in their final year of the Bachelor of Arts (Public Relations) degree at Deakin University. For students an internship in public relations is more than simply ‘work experience’. An internship provides an opportunity to network, build valuable industry contacts and put learning into context. The public relations internship unit gives students the opportunity to broaden their educational perspective, learn in an alternative environment and gain ‘hands on’ skills.
After their public relations internship placement, students attend workshops which provide opportunity for reflection and focus on career direction learning, a strategic approach to securing public relations work upon the completion of their studies.
What do the students say?
“Taking this subject has made me feel very confident about entering the workforce, especially now that I am at a crucial point in my PR career. I would HIGHLY recommend this unit.”
“This class was great! My confidence has significantly increased and I can’t wait to work in the PR industry. The work was not only enjoyable but extremely educational and has provided me with the relevant information required to successfully secure employment.”
“The internship subject allowed situated learning, and that was supported by intense interactive education - I was able to confidently approach an organisation about gaining employment and was successful - I'm glad I was encouraged to do so.”
Lauren Grinter "I had the opportunity to assist in the filming of a segment based on Kmart for ‘A Current Affair,’ and I also helped out with a fashion photo shoot for an internal Kmart magazine. The internship experience was a lot of fun, I got to see first-hand what a job in PR will be like in the real world by using the skills and knowledge I have gained from my course." |
