Postgraduate studies - Film and Video

Deakin University's Film and Video courses are designed to meet the growing demand of film and video industries. This is done by providing postgraduate students varied and diverse opportunities to create content, using Deakin's state of the art technologies including Motion.Lab, Australia's largest and most sophisticated motion capture studio. Students acquire the entrepreneurial skills needed to create their own employment in this vibrant and exciting industry.

These unique programs offer units that specialise in building on practical skills that match the opportunities for short film exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas. These are the only postgraduate programs in Victoria that are professionally oriented to give you the in-course experience of making short films. Through Deakin's network of international partners, the courses also offers students the opportunity for international exchanges, study tours, internships and producing projects internationally.

The programs are designed to cater for those who have studied film studies, mass media or media arts at the undergraduate level, and graduates with no background but a keen interest in film and video production.

Your career

At the completion of the course, graduates will have a range of folio work through which they can demonstrate the conceptual, creative, collaborative and practical skills they have acquired. Students will be well prepared to seize the diverse opportunities that exist for work in film and video production. The internship and international project opportunities available through the course will also assist students to identify opportunities for work and where their place in film and video production maybe.

This program offers opportunities for entering into stimulating careers as:

  • Entrepreneurs, developing independent productions or producing commissioned work;
  • Freelancers, sub contracted on major film and television production;
  • Working for production houses engaged in television and advertising production; and
  • Working for production houses engaged in corporate and training video production.

Online and on the move, making film and video is undergoing a period of massive change and unprecedented growth. The demand in knowledge for visual communications is increasing the need for film and video professionals.

The world of moving images has expanded in all communication technologies, including desktop, online and portable, and with this expansion comes new and exciting opportunities to distribute and exhibit creative work.

This proliferation in demand for screen content requires more producers, directors and independent freelancers within this dynamic, exciting and internationally growing industry.

Deakin state-of-the-art Motion.Lab is Australia's largest and most sophisticated motion capture studio, and the only motion capture studio in the southern hemisphere dedicated to performing and creative arts education.
