Credit for Prior Learning / Exemption

Graduate Certificate of Higher Education

Implementation of policy:

  • Apply for Credit for Prior Learning on arrival at Deakin University - only pre-Deakin experience can be counted towards advanced standing. If you have worked at Deakin in another capacity and have evidence of your competence prior to this appointment, discuss this with GCHE coordinator.

  • Postgraduate qualifications in adult education may be equivalent to GCHE and enable recommendation of exemption –please provide detailed unit of study descriptions to enable this to occur.

  • Each postgraduate qualification in school education usually provide equivalence in learning and teaching theory –up to 2 units. Qualifications considered have to be at postgraduate level –Cert IV training is not equivalent.

  • If teaching experience is to be considered for Credit for Prior Learning or exemption:
    • provide summary of dates and details of your experience in order to estimate the equivalence in full time teaching
    • to demonstrate competence please provide evidence of good evaluation data or a letter of support/reference from a supervising colleague.

  • Publications about teaching and learning can be considered as evidence of scholarship of teaching

Your unit of Credit for Prior Learning can be unspecified -please advise which unit to apply to. Please organise your enrolment and advise us of your choice of units for enrolment.
 

 

Policy summary

Credit for Prior Learning may derive from:

    * Accredited programs (completed or partially completed) taught as part of a degree, diploma, or university certificate course at an Australian University or TAFE institution may be considered for Credit for Prior Learning. Credit for Prior Learning towards a postgraduate award can only be granted for work previously completed at an equivalent level.
    * Learning acquired in a relevant context, such as in a course offered by an overseas university, a professional body, a University or TAFE staff development unit, or private enterprise may be considered for Credit for Prior Learning. Such credentialed programs will normally be structured courses for which detailed content descriptions are available.

Learning acquired through work experience or through life experience where that experience is recorded in documentation supplied by the applicant to the University may be considered for Credit for Prior Learning.

In each of these circumstances, decisions will be made on the basis of the course content or experience being sufficiently similar in terms of learning outcomes and standards, such that studying the specified unit or undertaking the specified assessment task would require the expected level of academic or experiential undertaking.

Credit for Prior Learning will not normally be granted for studies or other learning completed more than five years prior to application.

Normally, applicants must apply for Credit for Prior Learning prior to enrolment.

All applicants seeking Credit for Prior Learning must apply in writing in the required form to the Co-ordinator of the Graduate Certificate of Higher Education, Faculty of Education, Deakin University.

Applicants must provide satisfactory documentary evidence in support of their application. Assessment of applications for Credit for Prior Learning on the basis of a completed or partially completed course will be based on certified transcripts and documents only. For applications for Credit for Prior Learning for un-credentialed prior learning the onus is on the applicant to provide appropriate evidence that is relevant to the proposed course of study. Appropriate evidence of un-credentialled learning would normally include evidence of duration, course content and any formal assessment, and satisfactory completion in the form of a certificate of completion or other written evidence provided by the course provider.

Applicants will receive a written notification of the decision, normally with three weeks of the receipt of their application by the Faculty.

The Course Co-ordinator shall keep a register of all applications, including reasons why individual applications were or were not successful.

 

Exemptions

Staff may be exempt from the Graduate Certificate course if they
  • have satisfactorily completed an equivalent award qualification, or
  • have demonstrated a minimum of five years equivalent full-time teaching experience at higher education level and provide additional evidence of relevant experience, education or training which is deemed to be equivalent to the Graduate Certificate.

Exemptions may derive from

    * accredited programs (completed or partially completed);
    * other credentialed programs; or
    * un-credentialed learning.

Accredited programs taught as part of degree, diploma, or university certificate course at Australian University or TAFE institution may be considered for course exemption.

Learning acquired in a relevant context, such as in a course offered by an overseas university, a professional body, a University or TAFE staff development unit, or private enterprise may be considered for course exemption. Such credentialed programs will normally be structured courses for which detailed content descriptions are available.

Deakin staff who have completed a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Higher Education, or who can supply evidence of exemption from the need to complete one from another Australian university where completion of a similar accredited program is required of academic staff, could consider applying for exemption.
