Postgraduate courses in Language

Enhance your current degree with a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Language. Regardless of which degree you are studying, the added benefit of a language qualification will open doors to exciting new opportunities and experiences.

If you have completed a university degree, you can enrol in the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma of Language either in addition to your postgraduate course, or as a stand-alone qualification.

Areas of study: Arabic; Chinese; Indonesian

Course overview

The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Language are available as part-time, stand-alone awards for students in employment, or while enrolled in postgraduate study at Deakin or elsewhere. The Graduate Diploma of Language will also replace a role formerly filled by the Bachelor of Letters in allowing students who have already completed a degree to gain a qualification in language. This will be of particular interest to in-service teachers who wish to retrain in order to teach additional subjects.

These courses are suitable for students with no language experience, as well as those who have previously studied the language, and native speakers. Students study different units depending on their prior knowledge.

Career Opportunities

Course graduates will find employment in:
  • foreign affairs departments, intelligence and security organisations
  • local government and community-based organisations
  • trade, commerce and communications industry
  • travel and tourism
  • education sector and translation services
  • health organisations
  • police/military
  • IT and engineering.

Fluency in Chinese is increasingly important in commerce and trade-related fields while Arabic and Indonesian remain significant in the areas of defence, security, and diplomacy.

All three languages are strategic in terms of Australia’s interests, and new opportunities for using these languages are expected to emerge in the future in response to our ever-changing world.
