The Master of Psychoanalytic Studies is arguably the leading course in psychoanalysis in Australia. It is an internationally recognised course that can be completed off campus by full-time or part-time study in Australia or overseas.
Programs in psychoanalysis at Deakin are designed to meet the development needs of people working or seeking a career in the areas of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy, this program examines clinical and theoretical issues, as well as the philosophical and social questions raised by psychoanalysis. The program examines the work of Freud, Klein and the object relations school and the Tavistock Institute, and focuses in particular on the ground-breaking work of Jacques Lacan.
This program is headed by Associate Professor Russell Grigg (translator of Lacan Seminar III, Seminar XVII) and taught by staff with extensive local and international experience in research, teaching, project work and publications and is supported by high quality study guides, electronic communication, and door-to-door library services.
Psychoanalytic Studies at Deakin is also the focus for a variety of research and scholarly activities. In conjunction with the teaching program, Psychoanalytic Studies runs a fortnightly seminar series during the university terms, featuring invited interstate and international speakers. The Program is closely affiliated with the Lacan Circle of Melbourne and other Australasian associations for the study of psychoanalysis and the training of clinicians.
