Postgraduate courses in TESOL

Postgraduate courses in TESOL

Deakin's Master of TESOL has been designed to address the wide diversity of educational backgrounds of students who wish to teach English to speakers of other languages.
Deakin's highly relevant and flexible TESOL courses provide:
  • a choice between studying on-campus or off- campus
  • a degree where international students can teach English and educational institutions (all schools and universities) in their home countries
  • a degree where domestic students can teach in adult education centres and TAFEs in Australia
  • admission for non-Education degree students to the course
  • A pathway to an undergraduate teaching degree or a postgraduate education degree.

Your career

The Graduate Certificate and Master of TESOL courses meet the growing need for English language teachers in countries where it is not the dominant language. The courses also address the need for English Second Language (ESL) teachers in Australia. Our courses provide a sound understanding of key principles and innovative practice in English language teaching, and the socio-cultural implications for individuals and communities.

Upon graduating from Deakin’s TESOL courses, you will:

» develop an understanding of the language teaching profession in a local and global context
» design, implement and evaluate curricula and pedagogical programs that are internationally relevant
» develop skills in analysing your learners’ language and English as an international language
» critically interpret intercultural communication
» ensure secure employment in a wide range of international settings.

Course duration

The courses are offered at the Melbourne Campus at Burwood and off-campus by part-time or full-time study.
The Graduate Certificate of TESOL is normally completed over 2 trimesters of part-time study.
The Master of TESOL is normally completed over 4 to 6 trimesters of part-time study or its full-time equivalent depending on your previous tertiary degree.

Professional recognition

These courses are not initial teaching qualifications in Australia. If an applicant does not already hold a teaching qualification recognized in Victoria they cannot meet VIT requirements through undertaking this course.

Students who are eligible for Victorian Institute of Teaching registration may consider the Educator course Master of Education (TESOL), accredited by Victorian Institute of Teaching for specialist teaching positions.
